Jackpot slots
Progressive Jackpot Slots, Megaways and High-RTP Slots Explained
Three kinds of slot draw players looking for a bigger win: progressive jackpot slots, Megaways games and slots with a high RTP. Each works differently, and each has its own catch.

Prize pools
How progressive jackpot slots work
A progressive jackpot takes a small slice of every bet placed on the game and adds it to a prize pool. The pool keeps growing until one spin triggers the jackpot, then it resets to a seed amount and starts climbing again. Progressive jackpot slots trade some of the regular base-game return for that chance at a prize far larger than the normal paytable could pay.
- 1The pool starts at a seed amount.
- 2A small slice of every bet on the game is added, so the meter climbs.
- 3One spin triggers the jackpot and the pool is paid out.
- 4The pool resets to the seed amount and starts climbing again.
Where the pool comes from decides how big it gets
- Network progressiveGrows from bets at every casino
- One prize pool shared by every casino that runs the game. Pools grow fastest and reach the largest amounts.Examples: Mega Moolah, Mega Fortune
- Local progressiveGrows from bets at one casino
- The pool grows only from bets at one casino, so it stays smaller but is won more often.Examples: Casino-specific
- Fixed jackpotNever grows
- A set top prize written into the paytable. It never grows, and the odds of hitting it never change.Examples: The top line on most classic slots
- Must-drop jackpotMust pay out by a set limit
- A pool that has to pay out before a set amount or a set time, so it gets more likely as it approaches the limit.Examples: Daily and hourly drop jackpots
In our ranking
In our slot casino ranking, JackpotCity (Mega Moolah) and Royal Vegas (Jackpot section) name a jackpot network or section in the terms we collected. The other casinos may still carry jackpot games from individual studios. What the jackpot share does to a game's return is shown in the RTP section below.

Jackpot rules worth reading first
Jackpot wins are where small print matters most, because the amounts are large enough to run into limits that never touch an ordinary win. Check these four things in the game's help panel and the casino's terms:

Qualifying stake. Some games only award the top jackpot, or give a better chance at it, on higher stakes. Others treat every bet the same.
Casino terms
Withdrawal limits. Casinos set daily, weekly or monthly withdrawal limits. Some exempt progressive jackpots from them; others pay a large win over several periods.
Casino terms
Bonus money. Many casinos exclude jackpot games from bonus play, or void a jackpot won while a bonus is active.
Casino terms
Verification. A large win triggers a full identity check. Being verified already saves days.
Treat the jackpot as a long shot that comes with the game, not as the reason to play it. The odds of hitting a large network jackpot on any given spin are tiny, and a budget built around winning one does not last.
Names you will see
Well-known progressive jackpot slots
A handful of progressive jackpot slots turn up in almost every Canadian-facing lobby. Knowing how each one is built tells you what you are actually playing for.
Mega Moolah
The best-known network progressive, and almost all of its appeal is the jackpot wheel. In our ranking, JackpotCity names Mega Moolah in its terms.
- Jackpots
- Four tiers, Mini to Mega. The top tier is pooled across every casino that carries the game.
- Reached through
- The jackpot wheel
- Base game
- Simple and fairly modest

Mega Fortune
One of NetEnt's two long-running progressives, with a luxury theme. A bonus wheel leads to its three jackpots.

Divine Fortune
NetEnt's other long-running progressive, set in Greek myth. It pairs its progressive with falling wilds and a free-spins round, which gives the base game more to do between jackpot chances.

Hall of Gods
Another NetEnt progressive, with a Norse theme. It is older than most of the lobby around it, which shows in the graphics, but it remains a common sight in jackpot sections.
- Jackpots
- Three jackpot levels.

Wolf Gold
Often filed under jackpots, but its prizes do not grow. Many newer "jackpot" slots work the same way. The prizes are smaller than a network progressive, but they land far more often, and the base game usually returns more.
- Jackpots
- Mini, Major and Mega, each a fixed amount.

Mega Fortune, Divine Fortune, Hall of Gods and Wolf Gold run as free demos in the slot library on our homepage. The jackpot meter may appear in demo mode, but the prize itself is only live with real money.
Reel mechanics
Megaways slots: how the reels work
Megaways is a reel system created by Big Time Gaming and now licensed to many other studios. On the standard layout, six reels each show between two and seven symbols, chosen afresh on every spin. Multiply the symbol counts together and you get the number of ways to win on that spin, from a few hundred up to 117,649.
5 × 7 × 4 × 6 × 3 × 5=12,600ways to win on this spin
Six reels, each showing two to seven symbols. Pick a spin to see how the count of ways changes:
The busiest possible spin, seven symbols on all six reels, gives 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649 ways.
Cascading reels
Most Megaways slots add cascading reels: winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, so one spin can pay several times. Many also add a multiplier that grows with each cascade during free spins.
One spin with cascading reels
A win lands
The spin pays as normal.
Winners disappear
The winning symbols are removed from the reels.
New symbols drop in
They fill the gaps and can form a new win, so one spin can pay several times.
Multiplier grows
During free spins, many Megaways games add to a multiplier with each cascade.
What the swings mean for you
That combination is what produces the occasional very large result, and it is also why most Megaways games sit at the high end of volatility. In practice that means long stretches of small or no wins between features.
If you like the mechanic but not the swings, play at a lower stake than usual, or try the game as a demo first and count how many spins it takes to reach the free-spins round.
Return to player
High RTP slots and what the number means
RTP is the share of all money bet on a slot that it pays back over a very large number of spins. The difference between 94% and 97% sounds small, but over C$1,000 of betting it is the difference between an average cost of C$60 and C$30.
94% RTP
C$60.00
97% RTP
C$30.00
98.04% RTPThunder vs Underworld
C$19.60
The third row is the highest listed RTP in our demo catalogue (see the table below). Bars run from C$0 to C$100 of average cost.
Why progressive jackpot slots often pay less in the base game
The trade-off is usually visible in the RTP. On many progressive games part of the advertised return is the jackpot itself, which almost nobody will win, so the base game pays back less than a comparable non-jackpot slot. If you want long sessions, that matters more than the size of the meter.

Two things to keep in mind
- RTP describes millions of spins, not your session; a 97% slot can still empty a balance quickly.
- Many studios publish a game in several RTP versions and each casino chooses one, so the figures below are the studio's default listing, not a promise about any casino. Open the game's info panel at the casino to see the version it runs.
| Slot | Studio | Listed RTP | Average cost per C$1,000 bet |
|---|---|---|---|
Thunder vs Underworld | Pragmatic Play | 98.04% | C$19.60 |
Big Bass Boom | Pragmatic Play | 97.97% | C$20.30 |
Queen of Riches | Big Time Gaming | 96.90% | C$31.00 |
Opal Fruits | Big Time Gaming | 96.75% | C$32.50 |
The Race | Big Time Gaming | 96.74% | C$32.60 |
King of Cats | Big Time Gaming | 96.72% | C$32.80 |
Rasputin Megaways | Big Time Gaming | 96.68% | C$33.20 |
Max Megaways 2 | Big Time Gaming | 96.64% | C$33.60 |

FAQ
Jackpot slots questions
Short answers on jackpot rules, Megaways and RTP.
What are progressive jackpot slots?
Slots where a small part of every bet goes into a prize pool that keeps growing until someone wins it. On network progressives the pool is shared by many casinos, which is why it can reach very large amounts.
Do I need to bet the maximum to win a jackpot?
On some games, yes, or a higher stake improves your chance of triggering the jackpot round. On others every stake qualifies. The game's help panel states the rule, so read it before you play.
Can I win a jackpot in a free demo?
No. Demos may show the jackpot meter, but the prize pool only exists for real-money play.
What does Megaways mean?
A reel system where each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin, so the number of ways to win changes each time, up to 117,649 on the standard six-reel layout.
Is a high RTP slot more likely to pay out today?
No. RTP is an average over millions of spins. A higher figure means the game keeps less of the money bet over the long run, but a single session can still go far below it.
How are big jackpot wins paid?
It depends on the casino and the game. Some pay a network jackpot in one sum, while a casino's terms may set limits or instalments for very large wins. Check the withdrawal and jackpot sections of the terms before playing for one.
